Slow Finder Copying Files

I am copying 115G of files from an external SSD to and External USB drive. It's taking over an hour to do it on my newer iMac. If I do the exact same transfer on my old iMac it takes 8 minutes.

I f I use Chronosync on the newer system it takes 8 minutes.

Seems to be a finder problem.

Thoughts? Any help would be appreciated.

Some details.

Nothing obvious shows up in Activity monitor that I can find. Current system is Mojave, but even if I boot to an external SSD clean install of Monterey it is slow.

Newer System 2019 iMac 80G ram Mojave (behaves the same with Monterey)

Old system 2015 iMac 24G Ram High Sierra (I loved High Sierra!)

Source is a 2TB SSD External USB3 ExFat

Destination is 14TB USB3 External Hard Drive MacOS Extended Journaled

Hello JoeBlo,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help you get the files transferred to the other external drive.

There isn't a setting to increase the transfer speed, as it should always transfer at the fastest possible speed.

Make sure you're taking the steps here:

"Move files to or from an external storage device

  1. Make sure your Mac is connected to the external storage device (for example, using a USB cable or over a network).
  2. Click the Finder icon  in the Dock to open a Finder window, then do one of the following to move your files.
    • Move files to the storage device: Select one or more files on the desktop or in a folder, then drag them to the storage device, listed below Locations in the Finder sidebar.
    • Move files from the storage device: Select the storage device, listed below Locations in the Finder sidebar, then drag the files you want to a location on your Mac."

This Apple Support page has the full details: Connect and use other storage devices with Mac - Apple Support

We hope this helps to get the files transferred between the drives.

Cheers!
