ios 16 dictation how to insert a period

With ios 16, for some reason my voice inflection is frequently not caught and periods do not get added, so it ends up with long run on sentences. If I say "comma" or "exclamation point" or "question mark" while dictating, they get inserted and it capitalizes the next sentence. However, when I say "period" it inserts the word "period" and keeps going. And if I manually do the double space while dictating, it doesn't add the period (yes that option is on in my settings and works when dictation is not activated.). Anyone come across this issue and have any suggestions?
