I erased my hard drive, for sale, and attempted to installed macOS, but it did not find my hard drive. What can I do?

I erased my hard drive so that I could either sell or give my iMac away. I followed Apple's directions. I attempted to re-installed macOS, but it did not find my hard drive. Why and what can I do?

iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021, 2 ports)

Go to Disk Utility on command-R boot, and go to View menu -> Show All Volumes.

From there select the top most volume in the list, and then hit erase, choosing APFS if available or HFS Extended if not.
