how to display hard drive icon on desktop in Ventura

This seems to happen with each new operating system and is very annoying!

Mac mini, macOS 13.0

Open the Finder, click on the Finder menu->Settings->General->"Show these Items on the Desktop", and make sure Hard Disks is checked there.

External disk icon still stuck on desktop after removal An external drive keeps returning to my desktop every time I restart, and the drive isn't attached to the computer. Wondering how to remove that icon permanently without having to eject it every time after a restart. I've tried connecting the original external drive again and ejecting both partitions (in various orders, and both drives ejected at the same time) but to no avail. Actually when I plug in the external drive I then see the unwanted icon and the new icons of the two partitions. Also, the unwanted external drive icon has the same graphic as my computer's hard drive, and not the usual graphic of an external disk.

hard drive icon looks like time machine icon I have Venture 13.4 on a MacStudio. I have an external USB disk that works properly for Time Machine. But one of my external disks (MacHD3 in a Thunderbolt enclosure) also has the Time Machine icon assigned to it. As a result, for example, DxO refuses to find any photos on this disk. The disk is NOT listed as a Time Machine target, and there are no Time Machine directpries on the disk (but there is lots of other stuff). There was a hidden file .Time machine supported (or something similar) that I deleted. But the icon has not changed. How do I fix this? [Edited by Moderator]

You're welcome. That option has always been part of the Finder settings.

There are global computer settings under System Settings and then each app has its own settings. Previously called "Preferences".

Thank you! Why are there two places for settings? I never thought to look in the finder menu for settings. I just opened the gear icon for settings. Whew! You made my day!!!
