iCloud Library / Music Match sync issues

Hello -

I have a fairly large Apple Music library and have used Music Match since its introduction back in 2015. Just within the last few days, I have had a really unsettling bug crop up. I now have a significant number of my files that are now showing the "dotted cloud" icon indicating that it's waiting to be uploaded, can't be matched, is no longer available in the Apple Music catalog, or hasn't been released yet -- but way too many titles to have this happen to all at once. Some are full albums while some are just a few tracks of an album.

After trying all the basic techniques of logging off/on, updating the iCloud library, and turning off/on the sych library, I still have the same issue. Here is the kicker...

a) the files were all originally used with Music Match years ago and I never transferred them my new machines after the service started working as advertised. I have long upgraded my computers. I do still have a backup and replaced a small sample set to see if the service would re-synch. Nope. I can re-import but then it has both the new import file as well as the greyed-out version creating what is essentially a duplicate.

b) The interesting thing is that on the iPhone when I try to play one of these tracks, it displays the "this file is not available in your region" however when I look over at the Apple Music site for the same album it allows me to stream. It also has a download arrow to download the file (as it would normally if it were already in my library) but when I choose to download nothing happens. It seems to be in limbo. Not able to do anything unless I delete the old file reference (which I tried with success) and re-import.

Is this happening to anyone else? Or any other suggestions?

I "could" go down the route of replacing every missing album and/or file but this seems untenable with a library of 60k+ titles. I also curate my meta-data and have loved it over the years. I would hate to lose things like play counts, groupings, comments, genre, etc. Let alone the huge task of trying to rebuild.

Hi Brian Freeland,

From what you described in your original post, here is what we recommend: If songs are missing from your music library after you turn on Sync Library - Apple Support

Next, we'd like to show you how to perform the recommended troubleshooting steps via the link above. Please click to open the link, then read through the steps in the section titled "Check the cloud status of songs on your Mac or PC."

1) On your Mac, open the Apple Music app. On your PC, open iTunes, choose Music from the pop-up menu, then click Library.
2) In the sidebar, select Songs.
3) In the menu bar, choose View > Show View Options.
4) Select Cloud Status and Cloud Download.
Look for the following statuses next to your songs to learn what to do.
Apple Music app showing Cloud statuses next to songs

Waiting

The song won’t appear on your other devices because it’s waiting to upload. Choose File > Library > Update Cloud Library. Then check if the song appears on your other devices.

Removed

The song was deleted from another device that has Sync Library turned on. If you want the song to appear on your other devices, click the arrow Removed button next to the song, then click Add to Cloud Music Library.

Message that says this song was deleted on another device and options to delete, keep, or add the song to Cloud Music library.

An exclamation point

The song can't be played or synced across your devices until the original file is located. Click the exclamation point Invalid location icon, then click Locate.

Message asking to locate a missing song.

If the song is located, you'll be asked to use the location to find other missing songs in your library. If you see this message, click Find Files.

If a song is grayed out

If you see No Longer Available next to a song that's grayed out, the song was added from Apple Music and was removed from the Apple Music catalog.

The reason why we are recommending the steps above is because they will show you how to check the cloud status of songs to find missing music and resolve issues.
