"Looks like Apple Music can't play that"

I just set up a stereo pair of brand new HomePod Minis. When I ask Siri to play one of the playlists I've assembled, it responds, "looks like Apple Music can't play that."

When I use the Apple Music app on my phone and send the music to the HomePod Mini stereo pair via AirPlay, it works fine.

Why can't I use Siri voice commands to play my playlists?

Hello Kevin Maness,

It seems like Siri isn't able to play specific music when you ask, but you're able to AirPlay that exact same music from your phone to your AirPods, right?

Are you able to invoke Siri on your phone and ask to play specific tracks/playlists? Also try to make sure that your HomePods are updated:

Update HomePod - Apple Support

"By default, HomePod and HomePod mini automatically install new software updates, but you can manually check for updates in the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

The Home app on iOS with Software Update highlighted.

  1. Make sure that your device is updated to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS
  2. Open the Home app.
  3. Tap or click the More button , then Home Settings  > Software Update.
  4. If there's a new update, select Update. If there isn't a new update, you can select HomePod to turn on automatic updates and get the latest software automatically when it's available. Software Update also tells you if your HomePod is already up to date, and shows you the installed HomePod software.

A white spinning light appears on the top of HomePod while it's updating. The update might take some time. Make sure that your HomePod stays plugged in while it's updating. "

Regards.

The new HomePod Minis did need to be updated, but that didn't solve the problem. I did all sorts of things, like restarting the HomePods, removing them from Home and then re-adding them, making sure I was correctly logged into Apple Music, turning off my phone. Eventually it started working for most playlists, except for the biggest playlist I have, which really is probably too big. I'm wondering if there was some sort of iCloud syncing thing that took time. But I'm not sure.

In general, I'm finding the HomePod Minis disappointingly glitchy. They can work fine most of the day, but every so often one of several things goes wrong: one speaker turns off and then comes back on after several seconds (or doesn't—that was also mostly solved by a router restart), the HomePod stereo pair suddenly invites my old HomePod to join in (without me doing anything to initiate that), it still won't play my longest playlist when I try to start it via voice command (hey, Siri...), but it will usually do find when I use AirPlay with my iPhone or iPad and the Apple Music app. But then sometimes, a playlist will be playing audibly, but both the Home app and the Apple Music app say that nothing is playing. There are more oddities that go on, but I can't remember them all. Usually something basic, like turning off my phone or restarting the router will help.

It's annoying, though. I'm old enough to remember when much "less advanced" technologies worked right out of the box and kept working for a long time without any need to call customer service. Feeling nostalgic...

Oh, I have. But since the problems I'm having are mostly intermittent and unpredictable at this point, it's hard to communicate the issues to support and then expect any kind of step-by-step fix, since the problems may not be happening at that moment. It would be easier if there were one problem happening consistently when I tried to _____, like the "Apple Music can't play that," which now only seems to happen with that one list.

Thanks, though.

I solved the "Looks like Apple Music can't play that" problem in this specific situation:

  1. Several years ago, I imported a CD (Desert Vision by Paul Speer & David Lanz, 1986) into my library and synced it to the Apple Music cloud.
  2. I created a smart playlist and named it Desert Vision which populated with songs from the album.
  3. The smart playlist had the same name as the album.
  4. When the Desert Vision album became available in Apple Lossless format, I deleted the uploaded CD files from my library and started using the Apple Lossless files.
  5. The Lossless files did not populate into the smart playlist named Desert Vision; the old files were deleted so the playlist was blank.
  6. I asked Siri to "play the album Desert Vision" after which Siri replied "Looks like Apple Music can't play that." Siri responded the same when I request Siri to play the Desert Vision playlist.
  7. I deleted the Desert Vision smart playlist.
  8. Now, Siri will play the Desert Vision album upon request.
  9. This problem appeared with a relatively recent iOS update; but it is solved now for this particular album.
