double tap sleep/wake button difficult! When using Apple Pay

I can’t believe how often my iPhone 12 Pro Max turns off when attempting to double click the sleep/wake button while trying to complete an Apple Pay transaction in stores. The near-field communication on the stores pin pad triggers Apple Pay but all too often while holding the iPhone so that Face ID works I can’t depress the sleep/wake button twice apparently fast enough, consequently the iPhone just thinks I’m trying to turn the display off. The process was much more reliable with the Touch ID on the home button of my prior iPhone 7+.
