Photos on my Mac not displaying on Apple TV

My Mac is running OS 11.7. My Apple TV is a 4K running tvOS 16.1. I am signed into both devices with the same Apple ID. (Used for iCloud, email, etc.). I use a different appleID for purchases. My home sharing is set up on both devices and has defaulted to the purchase appleID. I don't know where I can change that. I have both media sharing and home sharing enabled on both devices.

Problem: When I try to set up the AppleTV screensaver to access the default photos library on my Mac it says it cannot open the library.

Hey Dala70,

Thanks for explaining a little more so we could get a better understanding. So, if we have this correct, only your music uses a different Apple ID, and music is not something you use on the Apple TV.

You mentioned the Mac has macOS 11.7 installed. There is an update that's available, macOS 11.7.1 that was recently released. Try backing up and updating your Mac to see if this will have any affect on viewing the Photo library.

Also, make sure you are following the steps found in the first link shared earlier.

Use Home Sharing on your Apple TV
To use Home Sharing to access your computer's media library on your Apple TV, sign in to Home Sharing on your Apple TV:
1. Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Home Sharing.
2. Select Turn on Home Sharing.
3. Sign in with your Apple ID. Use the same Apple ID for every computer or device on your Home Sharing network.

After you sign in, follow these steps to access your computer's media library on your Apple TV:
1. Connect your Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
2. On your computer, open the Music app, Apple TV app, or iTunes for Windows.
3. On your Apple TV, go to the Home Screen, select Computers, and choose a shared library.

You can also view photos from your computer on your Apple TV.
• On your Mac: Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar. Click Sharing on the right. Turn on Media Sharing, then click the Info button  next to it. Then select Share Photos with Apple TV.
• On your PC: Open iTunes for Windows. In the menu bar, go to File > Home Sharing, then select Choose Photos to Share with Apple TV.
1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences Settings, then click General in the sidebar.
2. Click Sharing on the right.
3. Click Turn on Media Sharing, then click the Info button  next to it.
4. Select Home Sharing, then enter your Apple ID and click Turn on Home Sharing. Use the same Apple ID for every computer or device on your Home Sharing network. and sign in with your Apple ID. Use the same Apple ID for every computer or device on your Home Sharing network.
5. Click Turn On Home Sharing.

Take care!

Hello Dala70,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. The setup that you mentioned, using a separate Apple ID for purchases, is most likely to be the reason for the error and issue. As mentioned in the setup section of Use Home Sharing to share media from a computer to other devices, your devices must be authorized for purchases in the App Store and iTunes with the Apple ID being used. "Make sure that all of your devices are signed in with the same Apple ID and authorized to play purchases using that Apple ID."

Take care.

I understand. My home sharing and store purchases are all set to the same Apple ID in my Mac desktop and my appleTVs. In fact, everything defaults to that ID and I can’t change it. Maybe more clearly, I cannot open my computer on my Apple TVs. This has been happening since I upgraded to 4th generation devices. Neither my home library of photos or music are accessible. I can only see those pictures that are in my photo stream or somehow connect to iCloud.

I don’t want to access Apple Music or only my streaming photos. I want to open the library to access the photos and music on my computer.

I have a different ID for email and iCloud since those services were offered long after I had setup an account to make iTunes purchases. I understand the difference and I’m logged into the correct accounts.

I’m not certain why this is so confusing. I have an Apple ID from more than 20 years ago when I needed it to purchase music from the original iTunes. Since then, it has also become the ID for all app, etc purchases. That ID has a .yahoo email login.

I also have an Apple ID that I set up when mac email for my computer was first available. Subsequently, iCloud, etc has been added to that. I use it for all those computer related services. It is a .Mac / .me email address.

Beginning with my first 2nd generation AppleTV, I was able to connect to my computer to see my pictures and play music that was stored on my computer. Through the 3rd generation AppleTV it worked fine. Since the OS when iTunes became music, I have not been able to open my computer library on my Apple TVs (I currently have 2 4th gen. One is HD, one is 4K) despite being logged in with the Apple ID I use for purchases which is the ID for homesharing.

I want to see the photos in my default photo library and the music physically stored on my computer - some purchased from the iTunes Store and some loaded from many CDs I purchased. I do not have an Apple Music subscription.

If the answer is that I need to use the Apple ID with a .Mac / me domain for homesharing, I need to know how to change that because when I have tried on my computer it returns to the app/Music Store ID and will not let me change it.

The AppleTV also has separate logins for purchases, homesharing and my .Mac account. They fill in automatically during initial setup.

I’m not confused, but it seems the programmers and support are. I have followed all the home share setup to the letter.

I miss the days when Apple did not release OS unless it worked flawlessly.

To further clarify, whether setting pictures from my home library or just trying to open the computer feature on the Apple TVs, the error I get is that the library can’t be opened. To check that it is on the same network.

All my devices are on my wifi network.
