Monterey 12.6.1 failure to install

So bloody tired of this. I have a wired Internet connection. I have been trying for hours to do the security upgrade from Monterey 12.5.1 to 12.6.1. I keep getting down to the five minute mark in the "preparing" phase and then the upgrade fails. Went through a similar situation with the upgrade to 12.5.1 which is when I got the wired connection. Why does this have to be such an ordeal? Why do I have to wait to download the same ****** 11.5 GB file every time preparation fails?

Interestingly, I thought things had worked on the third try but "About this Mac" says that I now am running 12.6, NOT 12.6.1. It is NOT stable; most apps are failing to open. 12.6.1 is still showing up as available.

I have done many of the obvious fix attempts: clearing the NVRAM; deleting the macOS Install Data via Terminal; making sure I have sufficient system storage (over 1 TB available).

I'm not ready to go up to Ventura yet.

UPDATE: It (12.6.1) finally did install. I started at 5:30 AM today after backing up, running Disk Utility and all the other good stuff we're supposed to do. I ultimately made it past the point where it usually failed (in "Preparing to update" at five minutes to go) at about 4:30 PM. Call it 11 hours and over 30 attempts, with breaks for restarting in safe mode, in recovery mode, NVRAM/PRAM resets, etc. What finally worked was persistence. It went through successfully in Normal Mode, with a wired connection via a 20-foot Cat 6 ethernet cable to my router...if that helps anybody.

Thanks to everyone who looked.
