Can I use a function key to make a footnote shortcut for a Word document

Writing several papers with required footnotes. I'm caught between Microsoft and Apple for the correct support. It would be a huge help not to have to go to the menu, then insert, then footnotes, then correct page, etc

How to do this with Apple Pages...

In System Preferences (now Settings) > Keyboard > App Shortcuts > + to add > select the app, and enter the menu exact item name from the app menu, and enter the shortcut, restart the app, and test.

Above is from Monterey and Pages, and selecting ^0 as a shortcut for Footnote in Pages, as I don't have Ventura handy, and don't have the Microsoft apps around.

For more control than just an Fn key you might look at a macro app like Keyboard Maestro . It can do anything you can do with just a shot keystroke combination. like changing the font size and engaging a CSS file in Safari:

I use it to launch apps, enter predetermined text in documents and replies like this one, change system preferences, etc. I believe Keyboard Maestro is the more powerful of the macro apps but there are some in the App Store that might meed your needs. Go there and search for macro.

The following text, which has nothing to do with this topic, was added by typing this key combination: x2cov

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

Just and example of what fan be done.

How many times have I told you that using Emacs would rot your brain. Just look at the shortcut key combination… 😃

LooooooL!!!

As it happens, I am a vi user - I learned to use it in, I think, 1983. Most of the key commands are still in muscle memory, even though I only rarely use it now.

A few people tried to convince me to use Emacs, but I only tried it a few times and never actually learned it.

Uh, what is an "Emac"? Seriously.

Emacs, vi (also vim), and pico (also nano) are common command-line text editors.

Some have GUI options.

They’re immensely older than Microsoft Office.

These and other tools continue in wide use as they’re good at their tasks.

Better, in various ways, for their intended text-editing purposes.

Word tries to be both an editor and a typesetting tool.

For editing an ASCII or UTF-8 text file, Word is… awkward.
