Background App Refresh not working on any application

I have an iPhone 11 running iOS 16.1 and since yesterday none of the application (non Apple related) are updating the content while in background mode. The applications will only update the content/notifications when I manually open the app.


I have confirmed that the Background App Refresh option is enabled for the phone and in each application (using both wi-if and cellular data). I also tried updating the applications and the iOS but the issue persists. Even after resetting all the settings and clicking on “Allow notifications” for each app, the notifications are still not showing.


The device does not have Low Battery mode enabled either.


I tested with Telegram, Instagram, WhatsApp, and iMessage and only received the notification for iMessage.


Would appreciate the help as this is driving me crazy. Thanks!

Thanks for posting here in Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're not receiving Notifications for third-party apps. You've done some great troubleshooting so far. Do you have a different device that you can test out the notifications with?


If you've checked for updates, removed & reinstalled the apps, we'd suggest to check with the app developers to have this isolated further: How to contact an app developer
