Resolution scaling option for external display disappeared with update

Hi,

I have always been using my external 4K Dell monitor with my M2 Macbook Air. Before the update to Ventura, I could scale the appearance on the screen since everything is tiny on a 24" 4K monitor, but since the update the option for scaling has disappeared and the only way to change the size of the UI is to change the resolution, which renders the image unsharp.

Any workarounds or solutions?

Thanks.

The worst part is that Apple refuses to even recognizes this problem. Their customer support pretended to be blind when seeing the resolution changes and the sharpness decline, lol.

Thank you, this helped me get back a sharp 2K-esque display on my 4K Samsung monitor, and didn't require the installation of additional software. I never had a single problem with this display until upgrading to Ventura, so I hope Apple fixes the underlying issue soon.

I have held off updating to Ventura because of the numerous identified monitor woes. I have a Dell Ultrasharp 34” and Dell Tech Support told me specifically (Nov 3 chat) they do not list any of their monitors or the Dell Display & Peripheral Manager as compatible with Ventura. I saw on another Dell support page they don’t test until things come out final - so allegedly they didn't’ test with any of the betas if that is correct.

Ok, tanks, but i don’t think that is my problem since the monitor is only connected through a USB-C hub with an HDMI cable. I’m not using any of Dell’s software, but is only referring to the scaling built into macOS. That used to work fine, and now the option is gone.

There have been several similar cases, where displays do not offer all the options that used to be present.

While waiting for a fix, a common solution has been to use third party utilities like BetterDisplay, of SwitchResX.

The former is free, and the latter offers a trial period.

I have found, that killing the 'windowserver' process through the Activity Monitor resolves the issue for me. (Double Samsung U28E590D over HDMI)

Downside: You have to do it every time after boot or extended sleep. But at least for me a better solution than setting up Dummy Displays.

Had the same problem: External 4K monitor (HP 27f 4k), lost most of the scaled resolutions when updating to Ventura - only remaining ones were native 4k (too small) and 1920x1080 (too big). Solved by switching from a HDMI cable + cheap adapter to a DisplayPort/USB-C cable. All scaled resolutions are back. Side effect: 4K now runs with 60Hz instead of 30Hz.

I have the same issue. Chatted with Apple online and via phone. No one was knowledgable about this, a few even tried to avoid recognizing the problem by saying that the text looked fine to me when do screen share when they are in fact less sharp when switched to a low resolution option. Why do they refuse to raise this issue up so that it can be fixed in the next update? Very bad mechanism.

I have DELL 3818DW. It worked perfectly with the scaling option before upgrading to the 13.1.

Shame shame shame apple. Just poisoned my Windows migration experience with Ventura 13/13.2, using an expensive LG display with a Mac Mini 2023 through native DP/USBC, and really dumb scaling options. Missing the text scaling slider in the Display setrings UI completely.

The HiDPI resolutions either too large. Tried it on HDMi where there is a good sizing but refresh rate drops to 30hz. WTF??
