Apple Watch Ultra says “wrong passcode” even though I didn’t enter one

I woke up this morning, put on my watch which had been sitting next to my bed, and found it said “Wrong passcode try again in four hours”. I hadn’t even entered a passcode as I’d been asleep and it was working fine last night, so I have no idea why this was displaying. I then rebooted the watch and now it’s saying “wrong passcode try again in eight hours”. What the **** is going on?

I’m the end I had to erase the watch and re-pair and set it up. Very annoying. When I tried resetting the code in the Watch app on my phone, it was prompting me to unlock the watch, which I couldn’t do because it had locked itself. Crazy!
