My phone doesn’t have the option to click on recently deleted messages

When I tap edit in the messages app the only options available are select messages, edit pins and edit name and photo. How to find the option to show recently deleted messages?

Messages App I do not have an "edit" function at the top left of my Messages App screen thereby not allowing me to recover recently deleted messages. Various screen images in search engines show this edit function. I have quite new phone operating latest iOS version 16.1.1. Help please.
