I’m having a quite similar issue. I’m using an anger usb-c hub. I can put in an SD card and the iPad Pro (6th gen) sees it fine, can create folders, and copy/paste. However, a T5 or T3 SSD connected to the same hub or even connected directly to the iPad sometimes shows up as “untitled” or not at all. I can’t create a folder on the SSD and no files can be copied to the drive.

SSD storage can be connected to iPad and iPad Pro with caveats…

As the iPad has limited power capabilities, dependent upon the Storage Device, an external power source is often required. For HDD or SSD, connected via USB, an external power source is almost certainly required.

If you have one of the newest iPad Pro models, with a USB-C connector, you may need to utilise a powered USB hub (i.e., it has its own source of power) - connecting both the iPad Pro and the storage device to ports on the hub. Older models of iPad, with a Lightning connector, will require use of an Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter:

Be aware that to be recognised by iPadOS, the attached USB storage device must be formatted to FAT, FAT32, exFAT, APFS or HFS+ with a single partition. Microsoft NTFS is not supported. Formatting and partitioning, if required, must be performed using a separate computer; iPad does not provide any facilities to format an external storage device.

Multiple reports of have been seen here of issues with some third-party hubs after updating an iPad to iPadOS16.1.

Not all USB-C hubs are suitable for use with iPad. Hubs that are not explicitly declared by the respective manufacturer to be compatible with iPad appear to have issues with iPadOS16.1 - whereas those that do state compatibility seem to be unaffected by this issue.
