Ventura file system delay

My attached 2Tb SSD via USB-C is incredibly slow after upgrading to Ventura. Anytime I attempt to view directories/files in finder either local or an external Thunderbolt attached SSD, the machine drags on for 20+ seconds. This process was nearly instant under MacOS 12.5. How do I resolve besides going back to 12. It is incredibly painful and a massive problem in my workflow.

I'm confused by your post. Is the issue only when accessing the external drive or do you have the issue with the internal drive as well?

What file system is being used on the external drive? If it is NTFS, then you may need to update the manufacturer's proprietary software & driver as the current software/driver may not be fully compatible with Ventura.

Disconnect all other external devices in case one of them is interfering.

Make sure the external drive is connected directly to the Mac.

Have you restarted the Mac to see if that helps?

Also try booting into Safe Mode to see if things improve since this will prevent third party software from automatically launching during boot & login. However, Safe Mode will prevent writing to an NTFS volume since the third party driver will be disabled. If you are running any anti-virus software, cleaning/optimizer apps, or third party security software, then uninstall them by following the developer's instructions. These types of apps are not needed on a Mac and usually cause more problems than they solve, plus they impact system performance.

Both internal and external formatted via the MBA using the latest APFS. The external Samsung 980 2Tb drive is attached via USB-C to an OWC Thunderbolt dock. I did mention this impacts both internal and external disk. This combo did not have this problem prior to upgrading to MacOS 13 on 12-12.5. I don't run NTFS on my Mac. I submitted a bug report to Apple. This is not a hardware issue.

Disconnect all external devices then to see how the laptop works. If the issue persists with no external devices connected, then you likely have an issue with some third party software. Usual culprits are anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, and third party security software. Does Safe Mode make any difference?

You may want to run EtreCheck and post the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper so we can review it for any clues.
