The My Photo Stream album is not shown, if you are having iCloud Photos enabled for Photos. Check, if iCloud Photos is enabled in the Photos > Preferences > iCloud.

Have you previously used My Photo Stream with your AppleID? My Photo Stream is only supported for long time users with an older AppleID. New users with a recently created APpleID are expected to use iCloud Photos instead of the older My Photo Stream. My Photo Stream is only useful on older devices with older system versions that do not support the new image formats HEIC, Live Photos, Portrait Mode photos anyway. You can't even transfer videos with My Photo Stream.

"If you recently created your Apple ID, My Photo Stream might not be available. If My Photo Stream isn't available, use iCloud Photos to keep your photos and videos in iCloud."

thank you; this may explain it.

i do have iCloud photos enabled on the mac. so i turned it off and now photo stream shows up

from your discussion, it seems that iCloud is the way to go; if i try to turn this on on the iphone, i get a message saying that 29000 photos will be deleted. so i am a bit worried. if these are redundant ones, then it is ok but i don't want to lose photos.
