Custom shortcut for app on macOS

Hi,

I usually work with several apps active at the same time, usually few windows in each app and I often use terminal which is running something and is minimised. Then I want to open a new terminal window without maximising the already running terminal window. I would love to make a shortcut for this action. So far, I managed to make an automator + shortcut version, but this only maximises the already running one without opening a new window. Is there any solution, how to achieve this?

I'm running macOS 12.6

Thanks for your help.

Here is a simple solution. It just switches to Terminal and opens a new window.

1) In Automator, create a new "Quick Action" like the image below, and save it (for example as "New Terminal Window").

2) At the moment, this can be run already from (application menu)->Services->New Terminal Window

Now all that is needed is to add a keyboard shortcut.

Go to System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts->Services, and add the shortcut of your choice (make sure to choose one that is not generally in use for your applications).

Note: the first time you run this Service (aka "Quick Action") from a different application you see an alert saying "(app name) wants to control Terminal" - of course you want to allow this. From then on it is just smooth sailing....

I see what you mean, it indeed does the thing. Although at this moment I have 16 opened apps and cmd+tab circles through them. I was wondering, if there is the possibility to do such thing. It is highly specific task, I know. It may come down to getting used to other way of work, such as two tabs in an existing window and switching between them.

I can see that this being something you do a lot, there is time to be saved by reducing it to a single shortcut; you don’t have to circle through all applications (you can navigate the application switcher in either direction) but again even a few extra arrow pressed each time can add up.

It is not hard to make a little script for this. I am away from my mac now but will do some tests later today and will let you know.
