Can't download music playlists on Watch anymore

Hi. I have iPhone 11 (iOS 16.0.3) and Watch 5 (watchOS 9.1).

After the latest update on both devices the download of playlists from Apple Music to the Watch via the Watch app is stuck. The animation near the title of the playlist is keep on wheeling, if I press it it says the download will start soon, but few hours have already passed.

I've initialized the watch yesterday for I've read it could have fix the issue but the issue is still here today.

Any suggestion?

Thanks!

Thanks for clarifying giolinke,

Have you made sure when downloading music that you are on Wi-Fi and Low power Mode is turned off?

We suggest following these steps to see if they resolve the issue.

Add music to Apple Watch - Apple Support

"Add music using your iPhone

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap My Watch, then tap Music.
  3. Below Playlists & Albums, tap Add Music.
  4. Select albums and playlists to sync to your Apple Watch.

In watchOS 9.1, music is added when Apple Watch is placed near your iPhone. In earlier versions of watchOS, your Apple Watch must also be connected to power.

Tip: Use the Music app on your iPhone to create playlists specifically for music you want to listen to on your Apple Watch—music that motivates you during a workout, for example. See the Apple Support article How to make a playlist in the Apple Music app.

Add music using your Apple Watch

If you’re an Apple Music subscriber, you can add music using your Apple Watch.

Note: Adding music isn’t available in the Apple Music Voice Plan. For more information, see the Apple Support article About Apple Music Voice.

  1. Open the Music app  on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap Listen Now or Search, then navigate to music you want to add.
  3. Tap a playlist or album, tap the More button, then tap Add to Library.
  4. A message confirms that the item was added.
  5. Note: You can stream music you add to Apple Watch when you have an internet connection. To play music when you’re not connected to the internet, you must first download it.
  6. To download the music to Apple Watch, tap the More button again, then tap Download.

Add a workout playlist to Apple Watch

You can add a playlist from your music library that plays automatically when you start a workout in the Workout app on Apple Watch.

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap My Watch, then tap Workout.
  3. Tap Workout Playlist, then choose a playlist.

The playlist is added to My Watch > Music in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

Note: A workout playlist won’t play if you’re currently listening to other music or audio."

We hope this helps!

Hello and thanks for your reply.

Sorry I used the word "Initialized". I meant I've erased the Apple Watch and Set up again as new (no back up). Both iPhone and Apple Watch OS are updated.

Unfortunately the issue is still there.

The only way to have music on the Apple Watch is to activate the "Automatically Add / Recent Music" option.

If I try to add a specific playlist, even a small one with just 10 songs in it, it says that the Playlist is going to be downloaded soon... and it doesn't, even after few hours.

Hello giolinke,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities. We're happy to look into this with you. To make sure we've got it right, when you say you "initialized" the Apple Watch, do you mean you restarted it?

Restart your Apple Watch - Apple Support

If that's the case and the issue hasn't been corrected, you may want to try unpairing your watch and iPhone, and then set it back up. Also, be sure to confirm that both the iPhone and Apple Watch have the most current OS versions installed. If you have updates to install, be sure to create a backup before beginning.

2. Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

3. Unpair and erase your Apple Watch - Apple Support

4. Set up your Apple Watch - Apple Support

5. Update your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Hope this helps!

Best regards.
