external monitor goes black

I have a MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.0 and connected an external monitor. The monitor is recognized and visible in "Displays" but goes black every other minute or so. It is not the monitor as I returned the first Dell monitor thinking it was defective after I switched out the cables and Apple adaptors. I bought a new more expensive monitor thinking it was the quality or manufacturer and no - immediately the same thing. I was told to select "variable" on the refresh rate and there is no such option with Ventura. Apple support (4th person) scheduled me for a Genius Bar appt. but knowing they only have Apple products - I canceled it. I should be able to connect an external monitor regardless of the manufacturer.

Anyone out there experiencing the same?

Hey blazine1012,

Take a look at this link to see if it will help with your issue, Use an Adaptive Sync external display with your Mac - Apple Support. Found in this article is the following:

What you need
To use a variable refresh rate on an Adaptive Sync display, you need macOS Monterey or later and one of these Mac models:
Any Mac with Apple silicon
• Any of these Intel-based Mac models:
• MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
• MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
• MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020)
• iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020)
• Mac Pro (2019) when used with any of these Radeon Pro MPX modules: W5500X, W5700X, W6800X, W6900X, or W6800X Duo
For best performance, connect your Adaptive Sync display to the Thunderbolt  port of your Mac using a Thunderbolt, USB-C, or other DisplayPort-enabled cable. Do not use an HDMI cable or adapter.

Reach back out if needed.

Cheers!
