update mail on yosemite

Comcast is sending messages that my email application may be out of date. Comcast is updating security protocols so there is a chance I will not be able to use the mail app on my iMac. My operating system is OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. Is there a way to update mail without changing my operating system?

Hello mcfaa,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

We understand you're looking to update the Mail app on your iMac, correct?

If we're on the same page as you, the only way to update the Mail app is by updating the macOS version. If an update is available, let's be sure to back up your Mac before completing the installation. For assistance with these steps, take a look at the following resource: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

Use Software Update

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.

1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:

• Choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar, and Software Update on the right.

• Or choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.

2. If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.

Software Update windowe

3. Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times.

If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model. Software Update shows only updates and upgrades that are compatible with your Mac.

Take care!

NO

Mail is a Builtin Application to the version of OS X installed on this computer

The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.

With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install.  For Best results use Safari to commence the download as Others may not work.

Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence.

Make Time Machine Backup  is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS

Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina, Big Sur & Monterey supports only 64 bit and there is no workaround.

Suggest using Go64 to find 32 bit application before attempting the upGrade. Some or many of the Application already installed may require an update or upGrades to 64 Bit Version

The world is pushing us out of Yosemite.

My apple mail works

but Safari does not

and the Firefox that works with Yosemite is rapidly aging,

some sites are complaining.

Apple only allows iTunes IOS backups starting with Sierra

so I have already made a mini with Sierra.

The device support update that allows older systems to make backups

is no longer supported for Yosemite.
