Sync External Drive to icloud

How can I sync external drive to icloud?

When I google, steps are only to back up, but I like to sync.

Can I back up external drive to icloud with TimeMachine?

Please help.

You cannot sync an external drive to iCloud or backup an external drive to iCloud.

Can I Backup from an External Drive to iCloud? I keep all my work an External 4TB drive, as my iMac HD doesn't have the capacity to store all my work. I work from these files directly but need to back these up somewhere else other than the HD or my iMac (which as I said doesn't have the space anyway). This is for safety and security. Does iCloud store the files locally on the iMac hard drive when you copy / backup files from and external HD to iCloud? As this seems to be taking all my my iMac storage space...? Is there a way to do this? Or do I look at an alternative cloud based backup system?

Backing up to icloud and to external hard drive I am backing up my files to icloud because I want to optimize my storage. I am running out of space on my macbook pro. However, I also back up my computer to an external hard drive through time machine. Does this mean that files that are put on icloud but no longer on my computer locally will not be backed up to the external hard drive? Is there a way to back up to the external hard drive and to icloud while optimizing storage?

Can I backup (not move) all my files on my mac (documents + all photos, videos, music) using iCloud? I never get around to backing up to an external drive. I pay for iCloud because I thought it backed up all the files on my mac mini. I don't want to only store files in the cloud - I want them on my mac but also have copies in icloud in case my hard drive crashes or is stolen. Everything I read either talks about syncing a phone or talks about storing my mac files on icloud instead of on my mac hard drive. Can someone explain? thanks.
