Itunes Issue

I recently found out that on iTunes I have two copies of each song. One list is listed as 1.m4a and the other is listed as .m4a. I went through and deleted songs under .m4a and realized that half the songs in 1.m4a was also deleted. I had to go back and add each song. Any advice on how to handle this problem?

See Duplicate songs in iTunes - Apple Community. You would normally want to discard the ... 1.m4a files for preference, which will usually be the newer copies. It can be confusing if two entries in the database end up pointing to the same physical file. There isn't a good way that I know of to test for this.
