Airdrop not working on iphone 14 pro max

Hello everyone, I am using iphone 14 pro max running on ios 16.1. Ever since I got the phone about 2 weeks ago (it was on ios 16.0, then upgraded to 16.0.3), airdrop has not worked at all. For me, there have been 3 problems so far:

  1. Whenever I want to airdrop something (e.g. pictures, files, websites, etc.) to a phone contact (not a stranger), the receiver’s iphone does not pop up any notice (the usual airdrop window in the middle of the screen). And I would like to highlight that not a single times does the airdrop menu pop up.
  2. The contact I want to airdrop appears in both sections of airdrop menu: the contact section (where it shows the people you already added in your contact list), and the ‘public” section (where it show other people with ‘everyone’ turned on in airdrop options). And it doesn’t matter which section I pick (I pick both all the times), the contact does not see any pop up window to accept <- Back to problem 1.
  3. I don’t see the big arrow indicator at the top of the airdrop menu that is particular to ultra-wide band chip (If I remember its name correctly) and is often used to direct me towards other ultra-wide band colleagues.

I have tried restarting my phone multiple times (even after each ios upgrade). I even tried wipe cleaning the phone. And the 3 problems are still there. I read somewhere on reddit (If I remember correctly) that some people also have the same issues. I think it’s software related. Does anyone else experience that?

Thank you a lot for you suggestions! I have already enabled airdrop in screen time before raising this topic. I think I wouldn’t be able to find the airdrop option in sharing menu if that wasn’t turned on.

Besides, I added apple ID of the contacts already. Still it doesn’t work. But If I remember correctly, when I used my iphone 11 pro max (before switching to this phone), I didn’t have to save anyone’s apple ID. I just needed to save their phone number and it worked well.

I have a very similar problem -- using an iPhone 14 ProMax trying to send a photo to either an iMac or a MacBook Pro. When I select a photo to send from the iPhone and then select AirDrop I get a screen showing both the iMac and the MacBook with "Waiting" blinking under both icons. Tapping on either icon stops the "waiting" but does not result in the photo (or any other file) being sent to the recipient device. The "waiting" never seems to go away. Both Macs are running macOS 12.6.1 (I am delaying upgrade intentionally) and the iPhone is running iOS 16.1 (again, intentionally delayed). AirDrop is enabled in Screen Time restrictions. I will appreciate any suggestions; other users have been immensely helpful over the years.

Please check your Screen Time restrictions on your iPhone.

Screen Time

Settings > Screen Time > Content and Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps > AirDrop [Enable]

If you have Contacts Only turned On then please add Apple ID of the sending device to your list of contacts on the receiving device. See the pic at the bottom of this post for better clarity

Before you begin

  • Make sure that the person you're sending to is nearby and within Bluetooth and Wi-Fi range.
  • Check that you and the person you're sending to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. If either of you have Personal Hotspot on, turn it off.
  • Check if the person you're sending to has their AirDrop set to receive from Contacts Only. If they do, and you’re in their Contacts, they need to have your email address or mobile number in your contact card for AirDrop to work.
  • If you're not in their Contacts, have them set their AirDrop receiving setting to Everyone in order to receive the file.

You can put your AirDrop receiving setting to Contacts Only or Receiving Off at any time to control who can see your device and send you content in AirDrop.
