The tech specs for the iPhone XS say:

Splash, Water, and Dust Resistant

  • Rated IP68 (maximum depth of 2 meters up to 30 minutes) under IEC standard 60529

A footnote to this also adds: Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Do not attempt to charge a wet iPhone; refer to the user guide for cleaning and drying instructions. Liquid damage not covered under warranty.

Further, Apple's support document About splash, water, and dust resistance of iPhone 7 and later - Apple Support says about recent iPhone models, including your XS that: iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR are resistant to accidental spills from common liquids, such as soda, beer, coffee, tea, and juice. In the event of a spill, rinse the affected area with tap water, then wipe your iPhone off and dry it.

Note the advice that the phone has to be completely dry before charging and not to open the SIM card tray.
