Can't find a way of syncing non purchased songs from iTunes library to iPhone 14

Most of the songs in my library are from CDs which I imported onto iTunes. I can't seem to find a way of getting the Apple Music App to play these in my iPhone. I have tried syncing it with my iMac but iTunes only gives me the option of syncing podcasts. In the music tab the only option is for voice memos!! I don't subscribe to Apple Music - I just want to use the app the same way I used to use iTunes. Has anyone else had this issue and did you find a work around?
