MacOS Monterey on a 2015 MacBook Air

Hello, so I tried installing MacOS Monterey on my early 2015 MacBook Air and I keep getting a message that the required firmware couldn’t be updated. Can I get help?? I use it for school and work so it’s pretty urgent.

Under the present setup, after market drive being the impediment to Monterey, move from El Capitan to High Sierra macOS 10.13. Run under this for a time and then perhaps move up to Catalina macOS 10.15.

Notation below about 32 Bit versus 64 Bit in Catalina

Again, run this way for a time and jump to Big Sur macOS 11

The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.

With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install.  For Best results use Safari to commence the download as Others may not work.

Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence.

macOS Big Sur 11 hardware requirements

macOS Catalina 10.15 hardware requirements

macOS Mojave 10.14 hardware requirements

macOS High Sierra 10.13 hardware requirements

macOS Sierra 10.12 hardware requirements

Tips Big Sir Upgrade Released Nov 2020

Make Time Machine Backup  is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS

Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina, Big Sur & Monterey supports only 64 bit and there is no workaround.

Suggest using Go64 to find 32 bit application before attempting the upGrade. Some or many of the Application already installed may require an update or upGrades to 64 Bit Version

There are reports appearing on the ASC Forums regarding failed installation of Monterey on older Qualifying Apple Computers. In most cases this is related to having a NON Apple Original Internal Drive ?

The EFI Boot ROM included in Monterey is verifying for Original Apple Drive and if not found , may Balk or fail to upgrade to Monterey.

Reports indicate the EFI BOOT ROM is Required to Flash the Computer and Not the Drive and is a  requirement for a Successful Monterey Installation.

Possible solution is to pop out the after market Drive and replace with the Original Apple drive.

Install Monterey to that drive.

Reverse the previous step and put the after market drive back in the computer

Run the Monterey Installed to that drive
