Mac Mini Late 2012 - highest screen resolution with non-Apple monitor?

hi folks

From previous post, we see:

The Mac Mini's HDMI output port only supports up to 1920x1200

The Mac Mini's Thunderbolt/MiniDisplay Port output supports up to 2560x1600

Now.. I've connected the thunderbolt port to a monitor that has 2560x1600 resolution.

Cable is thunderbolt to HDMI.

I'm not seeing the higher resolution.

Do I need a "real Apple Thunderbolt Display" to see the higher resolution?

thanks!

You need a display that has a DisplayPort input in order to get the 2560x1600..

When the older Minis are connected to any display with an HDMI port, regardless of whether the port on the Mini is HDMI or Thunderbolt, the Mini sees it as an HDMI display and limits to an HDMI resolution. Reason is the display itself is telling the Mini it is an HDMI display and the hardware responds with the HDMI resolution.

Also, historically, the highest resolution at that time (2012) for HDMI was 1920x1080, hence the result.
