Not enough space to restore iPhone from backup Greetings, The error message is fairly self-explanatory but it would be helpful to know how a restore from iTunes on an iPhone actually works to understand WHY the error is generated. Since this backup I have is a few weeks old and belongs to the iPhone I wish to restore I'm guessing there's more at play than the backup size being less than the TOTAL storage on my phone. For example, my phone is a 128Gb version and the current usage is roughly 65% at 84Gb. That leaves about 44Gb available. I know the numbers don't perfectly add up but I'm using the iPhone's storage section to generate them. I'm running iTunes on a Windows machine that is dual boot(Linux). When I mount the Windows partition and cd to where the backup lives and use du to check its size I get 47Gb. So I'm guessing when you restore, your target device needs the available space for the backup to copy to the target for restore? Is that a correct assumption? [Re-Titled by Moderator]

Unable to restore backup due to insufficient storage Howdy, I recently attempted to update my 2nd gen SE from ios 16 to 18. I only had about 2 out of 128 GB of free storage, so I used iTunes to download and update my phone. This must have overwhelmed my phone because it was stuck on the white screen that says "press home to update," and when I pressed home and unlocked my phone, it would immediately crash and restart. Apple support online advised me to take my phone to a Best Buy which I did, and they did a factory reset. However when I try to restore my backup (which is on my PC, not iCloud), iTunes returns the message that the phone has insufficient storage. Looking at the backup file on my downloads, it appears to be 158 GB. Any advice would be appreciated. I would rather not use a third-party app to do selective restoring. I'm assuming an iCloud+ subscription would not help as the issue is with my device's storage capacity.

That suggests there is potentially something going wrong with the space calculation. I assume the free space you are referring to is on your system drive, usually C:? What is the size of your iPhone? You may be better off backing up to iCloud. See How to back up your iPhone or iPad with iCloud - Apple Support.
