Thanks but I've tried this and all other solutions offered. I have a newer iMac {with Apple Care} and my MacBook Pro is a few years older but has the very same problem. I’ve contacted Apple Care under my iMac and they walked me through all the suggestions they could think of but still no different.

Yes I’ve tried switching my keyboard "repeat" slider to the off position but this also does nothing to solve the issue…furthermore the slider will not even “stay in the off" position and in a matter of minutes when I check the slider again it moves back to the “on position” {first notch} all by itself. But again that does not even matter because it didn’t solve the issue being in the off position for a short time anyway!

Searching online there are countless Mac owners with this very same problem. I gave my search results to the Apple Care specialist so he could see how many other people have this problem and all he could do was included it in his report.

With so many people having this same problem it’s obviously and DEFINITELY a "Mac OS" issue. In the end Apple Care suggested I bring my iMac {since it has the Apple Care} into an authorized repair store but I told them I'm not willing to do that because other than the random double spacing everything works fine. Plus the fact this is an issue with my MacBook Pro as well. If it  were only my iMac then I would have been willing to bring my iMac in for them to look at .

This has been driving me crazy for many months. I've even spent money buying 2 brand new keyboards and trying them with both my iMac and MacBook pro…both wired and wireless but still exact same issue .

Then I thought ok finally a brand new OS and I really hoped upgrading to Ventura 13 would solve this issue once and for all....but sadly it did not!

ARGH…almost enough to make me want to go back to a PC…not quite but man oh man…this is just crazy frustrating as a business owner having to go back over every email, document, letter etc, etc just to backspace all the random double spacing…which I obviously didn’t bother to fix here!

I might actually have to bring my iMac in and have it looked at and not that it would do any good but at least the tech person can see this issue for themselves and pull their hair out like I’ve been doing for many months.

Hi Iamsoconfussed,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. Just to clarify, is the space bar is inserting an extra space and adds a period and capitalizes the next word? If so, you'll want to adjust these settings:

  1. Go to the  Apple menu and choose ‘System Preferences’
  2. Select the “Keyboard” preference panel, then choose the “Text” tab
  3. Locate the setting for “Add period with double-space” and toggle the checkbox to the OFF position

You may also want to try adjusting these settings if the previous steps did not help:

  1. Pull down the  Apple menu and go to “System Preferences”
  2. Go to the “Keyboard” preference panel, and choose the Keyboard tab
  3. Locate the “Key Repeat” slider setting and adjust it to the “Off” position

Beyond that, it could be a hardware issue. This article explains more about Mac models that may be affected by a hardware issue with the keyboard: Keyboard Service Program for MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro If your model is listed, then you may want to have it properly evaluated by a technician.

Take care.
