iMessage consuming more storage after transfer

I recently upgraded my wife's phone from an iPhone 12 128GB to the iPhone 14 pro 128GB. Prior to the upgrade she had not issues with storage as we utilize iCloud and optimize iPhone storage. After the transfer she is having constant issues with storage being full and the largest offender is iMessage. Does the data transfer redownload all messages before it starts to optimize iMessage again?

iCloud messages are reporting a usage of 145GB while on-phone conversations are 85GB. We have deleted many iMessage attachments to allow her to function but why all of the sudden after an upgrade?

Hey there jthibodeau41,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We're happy to provide some assistance.

After you transferred to the new iPhone, did you turn on iCloud Messages? You can check in Settings > your name > iCloud > Turn on Messages. We ask because this stores your attachments to iCloud which saves storage space on the device. It may take some time (depending on the amount of attachments you have and your internet connection) for this saved space to reflect on your device.
