Glitching sound and dropping outs on M1 Pro running Monterey 12.6

I've migrated from Macbook Pro 2018 to M1 Pro 14" and started experiencing issues with my external USB audio card Roland Rubix22. When I stream audio, or play music in Apple Music, or record it in Ableton Live, there're noticeable dropouts and glitches every 20-30 seconds.

I'm on the latest Monterey 12.6. Using native audio driver. Roland Rubix22 is connected directly to the MacBook USB via type-c cable. CPU load and memory load are way lower than 100%.

It is an absolutely horrible experience on M1 Pro that is expected to be super-performing.

I've already tried activities suggested in common threads with similar problems, like changing Frequency from 48KHz to 44KHz in MIDI settings, removing files from Library/Audio/.... etc.

Did anybody solve the problem?

Hello mnemoneg,

To help us get a better understanding of the issue, we’d like to ask a few questions.

  1. Does this only happen when using that external audio card? In other words, do you ever experience similar issues when using your internal Mac speakers?
  2. When this issue happens, do any errors appear? If so, what does the error say?

The above information can help us determine how to proceed.

If your Mac switches to a different audio device when the issue happens, please check out this link for information on what to do: If your Mac switches to a different audio device

If your Mac switches to a different audio device

When you’re using an external display with your Mac, if your audio output or input immediately reverts to a different audio device than the one you selected in Sound preferences, do any of the following:

• If you have headphones or external speakers plugged into a Mac connected to a display: When you select the display’s built-in speakers in the Output pane of Sound preferences, your selection may revert to the headphones or external speakers. To select the display’s speakers, first unplug the headphones or external speakers, then make your selection.

• If you have a headset plugged into a Mac connected to a display: When you select the display’s built-in microphone in the Input pane of Sound preferences, your selection may revert to the headset. To select the display’s built-in microphone, first unplug the headset, then make your selection.

Thanks!

  1. It happens only with an external audio interface (in my case, it's Roland Rubix22).
  2. There are no error messages popping up. It is playing, but I experience short audio dropouts while listening (e.g. in the Apple Music from the local music collection).

The configuration and setup of my M1 Pro are identical to the ones I used in my MacBook Pro 2018 (same external audio card, same software, same version of operating system), because I've just migrated via Migrate Assistant. And I've never experienced any audio dropouts on my old MacBook Pro with the same setup.

mnemoneg,

With this issue happening when the Roland Rubix22 is plugged in and not happening when it's not, we can determine the issue is related to the Roland Rubix22. For this issue, please reach out to Roland for further support. Use this link to connect to them: Roland - Support

Take care.
