Why on earth must we export the images to rename them? Why can't we give them the file names we want while they are stored in Photos? I am literally exporting them to rename them and then deleting from Photos, just to bring them back in again with the new file names. Am I missing something???

We can create a choir to sing laments on the demise of Aperture, but the bald fact is that Photos is not, nor ever was, a replacement for it. To achieve similar (and after 7 years now) greater capability you need to use 3rd party apps.

You're missing a couple of things:
Yes you can rename photographs in Photos. You do this in the the Get Info window, using the 'Add A Title' option:
Strictly speaking, adding a title to a photograph does not rename the file. But that doesn't matter because if you want a file with the title as filename that's an option when you export.

I should have been more clear. I want to do a batch change. We should be able to batch change a group of, say 100 photos, at one time. For instance, naming by vacation name with sequential numbering, as SDakota001.jpg, SDakota002.jpg, etc. Sorry if this isn't the right forum. I searched for Photos on Mac.
I'm a former Apple Aperture user, and it was so easy to perform this task. Photos app just does not have the functions available that seem so standard.
Photos is basic. Also, it really does not care about files. (The fact that it renames your originals is proof of that.) It works with images.
