iPhone X Dictation issue

My dictation mysteriously stopped working on my iPhone X, and I cannot figure out why. I have run through all the suggested fixes except a factory reset to solve the problem. My microphone works. I can record memos and use the microphone when I make phone calls, but I cannot dictate a text message or do a search. I keep getting a small microphone icon right at the dialogue box showing the microphone disabled. I imagine I have done something to unknowingly turn it off. Any ideas out in Applelqnd?

Hey Jackcr54,

We understand that you're experiencing some issues with dictation on your device. You mentioned testing the microphone using the Voice Memos app. As the iPhone has multiple microphones, we want to ensure that we're testing the same microphone used by the dictation feature, to isolate the behavior a bit more. Are you able to Use Siri on iPhone? Here's how:

"When you activate Siri with your voice, Siri responds out loud.

  1. Say “Hey Siri,” then ask a question or make a request.
  2. For example, say something like “Hey Siri, what’s the weather for today?” or “Hey Siri, set an alarm for 8 a.m.”
  3. To ask another question or make another request, say “Hey Siri” again or tap the Listen button.

Note: To prevent iPhone from responding to “Hey Siri,” place your iPhone face down, or go to Settings  > Siri & Search, then turn off Listen for “Hey Siri.”"

If you find that you're unable to use Siri on your iPhone as well, we'd recommend reaching out to Apple Support to explore service options.

Cheers!
