Trying to add myself as a recovery contact on my husbands new iphone13. Since we are part of family shat, it says it should add me automatically, but it didn’t. My name comes up, but when I check it and try to continue, I get the error message “cannot add (name ). You can only add contacts who are using a message”
I do!! And I am using Os15. ? What does it mean using iMessage???? I text all the time!!!

no, we have separate apple ids and passwords, but we do family sharing. my name popped up immediately when trying to set up recovery- but I dont understand why it think I cant imessage- any ideas??

Same issue here. My husband and I both have newer iphones and we have always been on imessage. He was able to add me as recovery, but when I try to add him it says cannot add him 'can only add contacts who are using imessage'. I have turned imessage on and off for both of us, rebooted... etc. Nothing as worked. Did anyone find a resolution?

Are you and your husband sharing an Apple ID? If so, stop doing that immediately.

You cannot “add myself”. Carefully read and follow the article linked above. Your husband must invite you.

I assume “didn’t” means you hadn’t seen the link previously but you do now. Therefore, presumably you succeeded in having your name added.
