'ReportCrash' process in activity monitor has high cpu usage - how do I check the cause? (Also, what is ASL Sender Statistics?)

The ReportCrash process has a high % CPU value on my mac's activity monitor - currently 99% as I'm writing this.

I saw on this thread that this is due to an application launching and crashing repeatedly, and that to see what causes the issue I can look at my system.log. However, when I check that, I don't see any references to crashes or ReportCrash. Instead, my console log is filled with "ASL Sender Statistics" running every 10 minutes.

Are these problems related? Is the second one even a problem?

TL;DR I have two issues:

  1. High CPU usage from ReportCrash
  2. ASL Sender Statistics running every 10 minutes.

How do I solve these issues, and is #2 even an issue that needs fixing? Thank you!

Have taken only the Important aspect from the Report with some pointer on where to start to resolve some of the computer issues

Performance: Excellent

Problem: Apps are crashing

Description: ReportCrash takes up 99% CPU on activity monitor, indicating that something repeatedly crashes and relaunches.

Q -  Low disk space - This computer is running low on free hard drive space.

Q - disk0 - APPLE SSD AP0256Q 251.00 GB (Solid State - TRIM: Yes)

Q - Available: 50.08 GB

A -  It is suggested to keep at least 15%  to 20% of the Drive Total Capacity as Empty Space for good operations of the computer and for additional updates to Monterey to download, expand and install. Arrive at your own conclusions.

Q -  Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed. These files could be old, incompatible, and cause problems. They should be reviewed

A -  Worth the time to revise Third Party Applications for updates / upgrades and or outright Replacements that better suited for Monterey and Especially Apple Silicon M1 / M2 Computer

Q -  System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

A - Anytime there are that may modifications to the Operating System unintended consequence will follow. This may result in what the computer is experiencing now.

Q -  Runaway user process - A user process is using a large percentage of your CPU.

A - This dovetails into the “ Unsigned “   aspect above

Hardware Information:  MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)

Q - System Software:  macOS Monterey 12.2.1 (21D62)

A - This is interesting as it  reported below that Monterey 12.6 is installed but maybe not yet installed ?

A - That would make sense as this computer is running very low of Empty Space and may not install until hat issue is resolved

Software Installs (past 60 days):

Q -  2022-10-04 macOS Monterey (12.6)

A - Below is a series of steps to attempt to de-clutter the computer

Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac

Or Force a Reindex via Terminal Command “ sudo tmutil -E / “ without Quotation Marks

What is “Other” storage on a Mac, and how can I clean it out?

Free up storage space on your Mac

Locate backups of your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Notation - If the user is using a cloning software like Carbon Copy Cloner - suggest tweaking the Safety Net Feature in this software. It may be making additional Snap Shots that are not being Cloned to the Eternal Drive. If this should be the case, these Snap Shot could be using additional space on the drive

The final word from Apple on Managing the " Other/ System Data “ Category

Other / System Data: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can't manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac

From my experience over the year, looking is System Logs from Console is going to be less fruitful than expected.

Since about Snow Leopard and forwards - the Console Application, for trouble shooting, is not worth the time.

Most of what appears there, is basically " Apple Software Engineer Talk " that only they will understand.

Understand, we are all working Remotely from all around the world.

Therefore, we do not have the On-Hands experience the User ( you ) has with this computer.

The next best thing for us to having a semi - actual On-Hand experience  with this computer is to follow the steps below

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

The application is free or paid from added features.

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

Hello,

Thank you for your help. I don't think lack of storage space is the issue, because I currently have ~25% empty storage space on my mac. Specifically for the problem of lowering the CPU used by ReportCrash, what should I do now? Should I delete the unsigned apps/files on my mac? Should I try to find what system modifications I have? Thank you!
