system memory
I am seeing the message in Force Quit window: "your system has run out of application memory" on 2021 MacBook Pro (M1) with OS12.6 and 16 Gb. What is going on?

Can you provide a screenshot of this? That would most certainly help. Go Here: Take a Screenshot on your Mac - Apple Support

Thank you for the screenshot.
Reset Your Mac:
Getting that message, restart your Mac.
Yes I did and still do. I usually force quit my notes app. its the only way to remove the window (besides dragging it to the side) from my workspace.
What is application memory? is this the RAM?
didn't realize that i was using 74gb just for notes.
side question: how can i check how much storage my Notes app, is actually using. Im having a hard time accepting this.
An application can use more memory than RAM available. Excess 'memory' needed by the application is stored on the disk(s) in swap files and brought back into RAM when needed. Not as slow today as it used to be with HDDs. An internet search will provide more detail.
Go to the apple logo (top left of screen)> Click on Go then press and hold the Option key. You should see an item "Library" appear. Clear your cache folder and your cookies. Then exit the menu and open your finder. Under your home folder (or primary administrator profile) go into the system folder and search around until you find the Volumes folder (this should contain all mounted disks, if you cannot find it press shift-command-period key or the ">" key and this should reveal the systems hidden index) find the boot and preboot folders and open them. There shouldn't be any file in the preboot folder.
Hope this helps

Did you ever 'Force Quit' Notes when you received that message?
I did that. I actually try to turn off my mbp every night before going to bed. but this still manages to pop up at least once a day.
Application memory is the amount of RAM an application is using. 74GB of RAM is a lot. More than a lot.
Notes appear to be stored on disk here: ~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.notes/
Thats what i was thinking about, how can the total of Application memory be more that the RAM (16gb in my mbp)?
