AirpodMax Muffled Microphone

I just bought my max’s this summer. Recently, when I have called people while wearing them, they have complained that I sound muffled or like I’m really far away. Is there a way to troubleshoot this? It’s very inconvenient.

Hello larkin114,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Does the issue persist if you paired your AirPods Max with another device? Are you experiencing the same behavior if you record your voice? We're trying to isolate this issue further and see if it happens only during calls or when you play a recording of your voice as well.

To get started, let's make sure your AirPods are running the latest firnware:

Also, resetting your AirPods would be the next best step. Here's how:

1-First, charge them for a few minutes.
2-If you're experiencing issues with your AirPods Max, you can restart them. Press and hold the noise control button and the Digital Crown until the LED flashes amber.
3-You can also reset AirPods Max to factory settings. Press and hold the noise control button and the Digital Crown for 15 seconds, until the LED flashes amber, then white.
4-After you reset your AirPods Max, you can connect them to your iOS or iPadOS device, or connect them to your Mac or other device.
