Spacebar is no longer working for Play/Stop. Pressing spacebar has unpredictable results. Some times it brings up the new track dialog. Other times it opens the Library. At present it invokes the Piano Roll Editor. Nothing I do in Key Commands in Logic or Shortcuts at the system level has any effect.

I did. I soft boot had no effect so I figured that since the issue involved hardware a hard big might be in order. Pulled the power cable, gave it a nice 15 count, and plugged it back in. No effect.
Really didn't expect that to work since the spacebar performs normally in othe applications.

Hi there, have you tried quitting Logic (Command+Q or Logic Pro > Quit Logic Pro), rebooting the Mac, then launching Logic again? This sounds like your Mac is up for a reboot (at the very least). In most cases, such weird glitches can be resolved by restarting the macOS. If this doesn't help, please get back with more details, if possible. Cheers!

In all other applications on his machine the spacebar does what one would expect with one glaring and puzzling exception. If Logic Pro is running, hitting the spacebar in "Messages" starts a new message thread. If Logic Pro is not running spacebar behaves normally in Messages.
Thanks for the suggestions. Multiple keyboards, same problem, Logic Pro reports 35 double assignments but they weren't in Logic itself. Trying the Mac on screen keyboard helped solve the problem. Screen to turn it on under System Preference > Accessibility also has a checkbox for "Allow full keyboard access." Badly named but it enables screen navigation without a mouse. Unchecking it totally resolved the issue.
Check your key-commands if there is a double-assignment.
And another idea is maybe a faulty keybord or usb controller. Unplug all usb inputs.
