Hello daveday,

Given this is an issue with switching dark to light mode automatically, we'd recommend the following related troubleshooting steps:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Language & Region to make sure it's selected on the right region.
  2. Go back to Settings > General > then tap on Date & Time to confirm it is set to the correct time/date for your location.
  3. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Select Dark to turn on Dark Mode.
  4. Disable Automatic under this option.
  5. Close the Settings app with these steps: Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support
  6. Restart your iPhone - Apple Support
  7. Then go back to Settings > Display & Brightness > and enable Automatic once again.

Continue to test it out. If the issue continues to occur, then it would be best to contact Apple Support They'll need to take it from here.

Wishing you well, take care.
