MacBook Pro shutting down with error while idle

MacBook Pro 13 in, 2017, intel i5, 8GB RAM, updated to latest OS

For the last week, any time I leave my MacBook asleep for more than about 30 minutes, it displays a "shutdown error" and I have to reboot. It's often warm to the touch as well.

Things I've tried, none of which have fixed the issue:

  • Ran diagnostics twice. Both came up empty.
  • Closed every program to see if any of them is the cause.
  • Manually put the computer to sleep in case the issue was auto-sleep on closure.
  • Toggled various battery and power settings off and on.
  • Removed all browser plugins.

Learn what to do if your computer restarts or shuts down unexpectedly, or you get a message that your computer restarted or shut down because of a problem.

Kernel Panics are predominately caused by hardware faults or faulty third-party kernel extensions.
