Music will start playing while the Apple Music app is "off"

It seems that whenever I initially connect to any bluetooth audio device, or sometimes just randomly on a bluetooth device, Apple Music will start up with no user input. Is there a way to turn this off? This will happen when I first start my car, when I hang up a call at work (every single call), and especially when I put in airpods to listen to Youtbe or something unrelated. The only way I can make this stop is to delete the app then redownload it but that messes up many other things such as my alarms.

I attempted fixes on posts similar to this, those being to turn off autoplay, disabling handoff, and as stated above, deleting the app. Any suggestions on what I can do from here? I still enjoy Apple Music, I just only want to use it when I open it myself, not when I hang up a call at work.

Hello Tyguy1,

Thanks for your post to Apple Support Communities. You list out some interesting issues between your iPhone, AirPods, and other Bluetooth accessories. We do want to note that some Bluetooth accessories will automatically play audio on your iPhone when they are connected. Sometimes, it is expected behavior. We'd recommend filling out our official feedback form: Product Feedback - Apple

There were some additional details you noted that we want to look into. The issue with your AirPods playing Apple Music immediately after hanging up from calls was unusual. That shouldn't occur, unless you were already listening to music and picked up an incoming call. But if you didn't have Apple Music playing or stopped it and made the call yourself, it shouldn't begin playing Apple Music in that situation. Let's walk through some standard troubleshooting for possible Bluetooth issues. You'll want to test for the issue again after each step. Some you may have already completed.

  1. Reset your AirPods - How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support
  2. Update to the latest iOS - Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
  3. Toggle Bluetooth off and back on in Settings (not Control Center)
  4. Restart your iPhone
  5. Isolate the behavior to just your AirPods or any other audio Bluetooth accessory you were using before

You also mentioned "The only way I can make this stop is to delete the app then redownload it but that messes up many other things such as my alarms". Are you advising that in order to get Apple Music to stop from autoplaying through your AirPods (as example), you have to delete it entirely and redownload it. But doing so interfere with your alarms?

We want to make sure we understood, because that is a bit unusual. Are you using downloaded music for your alarms? Does force closing the Apple Music app not help?

We look forward to hearing back from you and working through this intriguing issue together.

Take care.

Hello!

Thank you for the reply. I filled out the feedback report, thank you for giving that to me. As for the troubleshooting tips, I guess I should add that this behavior has been going on for about a year or so. I always have Apple Music force closed via the app switcher unless I'm directly using the service. I've noticed this behavior on every bluetooth audio device I connect to and it doesn't seem isolated to any specific features. During this time I have reset both my Airpods and my phone (as well as my Apple watch for good measure).
