Passcode not accepting

I was changing my passcode and was reentering it when accidently i pressed the lock button. Now the iphone (5s) is neither accepting the passcode which i earlier had set nor the one which i had been confirming. I dont want to reset the iphone to the factory settings. Is there any way? And why is this thing happening ( it had happened before also with my ipad air)

Many thanks

iPhone 5s, iOS 11
