Text Messages didn't show up after my back up

I restored my phone to a previous backup (within 24 hours, as it auto backups) When I went through the whole process of setting up my phone again, everything was restored except my text messages. My iCloud says that there are 48 GB of texts but when I click on the message app, NOTHING is there. Everything I have ever held on to is gone. How do I recover these messages? I'm sick to my stomach that all of this is gone.
