Hearing aid low volume

I have moved from the Samsung s20 to the iPhone 14 pro Max and have noticed that the hearing aid volume is so much lower on iPhone to the point where it might be a make or break moment…wondering if anyone knows of possible fixes ? Maybe an update is on its way but this is literally so low it makes me very sad.

Did you check your audio routing under hearing aids? Was it route to Hearing Aids always?? One suspicion I have is that your audio was routed to phone speaker and you might hear from amplificaiton of your hearing mic picking up the phone speaker output. One thing you could test, leave the phone on the table, let it stream, then walk away, say 10-15 feet, do you feel the volume is getting even lower? If coming from the phone, without touching the phone, the volume should remain the same. But if it comes from phone speaker, the it gets attenuated with increasing distance.

For more details on audio routine, see Use Made for iPhone hearing devices - Apple Support. You may also search on YouTube.

One last question, what is your maker and model of the hearing aids? When you listen to Saumsung s20 for streaming, is it directly streaming to your hearing aids, or, through another intermediate device such as Phonak Roger?

So I actually have compared both at max volumes, I have used max volume for both devices on same apps (Spotify, instagram, YouTube, TikTok) and it becomes that loud on the android that I have to turn it down where as on iPhone I would want more volume but it’s max. On android it’s connecting straight through Bluetooth and shows as hearing aid and on iPhone it comes up under hearing aid on accessibility. I am hoping it’s a software issue and not hardware. Also I do not own any other apple product.

Sorry, one thing to ask: when you use Samsung s20 for phone calls, do you need to hold your phone close to your (either your head, or your body) in order to have the phone pick up your voice (through phone mic), OR, it is completely hands free, i.e., you can leave the phone on the table and stay away say 20 feet, like regular Bluetooth headset? The latter case is so-called "hands free". In such case, your voice is picked up by hearing aid mic and stream back to the phone.

Knowing this can tell me the Bluetooth streaming standard you are using with Android.

Aiv04, when you referring to hearing aid volume, which one are you referring to

  1. Amplification of environment sound
  2. Streaming from phone (phone call, media playing, GPS, alert, etc.)

If #1, it should not have anything to with which phone you are connected to. You could turn off Bluetooth on your phone and/or simply turn off phone, and experiment volume. I suggest you hear a common sound source to compare. I do not expect any differences.

If #2, you may want to compare the level at the 50% settings, assuming you can control hearing aid volume. Pay attention it is the hearing aid volume, not streaming volume. For example, if you click buttons on the side of the phone, it should not impact your emplification volume.

Looks like your hearing aid is from https://www.danalogic.co.uk/hearing-devices/danalogic-ambio

For your own benefit, compare the following scenarios, with the same %, either at 50% or, as the max, if you can tolerate. Regardless, keep it at the same level (on the phone) for both iPhone and Android.

  1. Phone calls
  2. Media - select more than one source, both from standalone app and browser
  3. Alert or Ring Tones for notifications

Is volume behaes the same in above categories, between iOS and Android?

One thing please confirm, is ther an intermediate device that connect between the phone and the hearing aids? I am more referring to Android phone, is there a 3rd device that first connects to the hearing aid, then connect to the phone?

If the difference only comes down to YouTube (which will be very surprise), it almost means nothing to do with hearing aids, you may want to compare the level settings of youtube video.

For hearing aids, whether streaming from phone call, youtube, cnn, BBC, it behaes the same as far as volume concerns.

Ok, I think you are better off doing the following

  • Get a different iPhone to test (as suggested above), ideally, you want to get
    • an older model, with an older iOS, iOS 15.x
    • another iPhone 14 series phone (it is shipped with iOS 16.x) - BTW, check out iOS version on your phone, if it is iOS 16, update it to iOS 16.0.2. Also you probably are better off visiting an Apple Store to get some help on testing it out
  • Visit the Audiologist you get the device from and have them tested for it.
    • Ask them to test on different iOS models.
  • Call GNReSound help line, again, this assumes your hearing aid is made by GN.
    • Also search online to see if any ReSound hearing users reported similar thing. Note, the key element here is iPhone 14 Pro Max.

From what you have described so far, I don't think it is your hearind aids. It is most likely an software issue on iOS.

Good luck!

Hi, it is not connected to the routing as no matter where or how far away I go from the hearing aid it doesn’t affect the volume, as my girlfriend would be able to hear it if it’s selected to speaker. It’s mostly on YouTube videos it’s much more quieter than when I used it on android. Also I have added a picture of the hearing aid I’m using, not sure if that helps :)

Check iOS version on your girlfriend's iphone, is it iOS 15.7 or iOS 16? Whatever it is, something of the combo with iPhone 14 and iOS 16 do not work with your hearing aids. As I mentioned earlier, contact your hearing aid providers, and tell them the situation. Also, ask to contact GNResound support line (again, assuming your hearing aid is from GN, you can confirm with your Audiologist if you don't know). Contact GN support line, give them the details.

If someone else you know has a different iPhone 14 model, I think you should try it out. Or, as suggested, go to an Apple store, try all different iOS 14 model to rule out if your phone happens to behave badly.

Whatever it is, yes, I'm pretty sure it is a software update, most likely on Apple iOS. There is a chance on your hearing aids, but you need to find out from your provider.

Oh, my last question posted earlier, on your Android phone, does it suppor hands-free call? See details in my earlier post.
