Safari 16 Monterey 12.6 how do I restore lost tabs with time machine?
I lost all my tabs the other day. How do I get them back from Time Machine backup? The SafariTabs files in the User Library don’t seem to exist in v.16.

Hey there Chr1sgould,
Time Machine won't show you a list of the apps you had open one week ago, but you can navigate to the specific date, then restore items, as shown here:
Restore items backed up with Time Machine on Mac
1. On your Mac, open a window for the item you want to restore.
For example, to recover a file you accidentally deleted from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder.
If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
2. Use Launchpad to view and open apps on Mac and open Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
You can also open Time Machine by clicking the Time Machine iconin the menu bar, then choosing Enter Time Machine. If the Time Machine icon isn’t in the menu bar, choose Apple menu
> System Preferences, click Time Machine
, then select “Show Time Machine in menu bar.”
3. Use the arrows and timeline to browse the local snapshots and backups.
If you see a pulsing light to semi-dark gray tick mark, it represents a backup that’s still loading or validating on the backup disk.
4. Select one or more items you want to restore (these can include folders or your entire disk), then click Restore.
Have a good one!
Hey Chr1sgould,
If you’re not able to locate the information you’re looking for using the steps above or by using Spotlight: Search with Spotlight on Mac, then reach out to Apple Support at the following link so they can look further into this with you:
Take care.
Hello Chr1sgould,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
If we understand your post correctly, you want to know how you can get your Safari tabs back on your Mac. We'd like to help!
In the Safari app on your Mac, choose History > Recently Closed.
You can also choose History > Reopen Last Closed Tab or History > Reopen Last Closed Window to reopen the last tab or window you closed, or Reopen All Windows from Last Session
Hope that help.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care!
Hi Dawn,
Tried those. I think what happened what is that link and it opened in the new window over the top of my window all the tabs that I needed. I panicked and went straight to the Open All Windows From The Last Session in History. That was too old for some of the tabs that I wanted. I wasn't too bothered at this stage as I've resolve this sort of problem before using Time Machine. But that was with Safari 15. The SafariTabs files buried in the User Library don’t seem to exist in v.16.
So how do I find a list of apps that I had open about a week go? I have Time Machine backups.
Thanks, Chris
Hi,
I've been using a Mac for over 10 years and I'm quite familiar with using Time Machine to resolve problems like when I delete things I shouldn't have. I've had this problem with Safari before and I've always been able to use Time Machine to resolve it by finding the file I need in the user library that has the information as to which tabs were open when I lost them.
However, Safari 16 highest moved and/or renamed the files. So I am looking for someone to tell me what to restore. I know how to restore it once I found it!
Thanks, Chris
Tried that now. Apple support was no help either! According to the agent I spoke to it can't be done. The information I'm looking for is not recoverable from the back up.
I don't believe that - both the list of open tabs and the previous session information must be stored in a file somewhere. All I need to do is restore this file from shortly before I first lost the tabs. Someone must know how Safari 16 works!
