How do I get or access my on screen code for airplay?

If it is asking for a password, then check the Settings on Apple TV for that. Initially it might be set to an unknown password (••••••), but you may edit that to something different or disable the password requirement.
Apple TV: Settings﹥AirPlay and HomeKit﹥Allow Access﹥
If there is no AirPlay password set, then you would be asked to copy a 4 digit pairing code from one screen to the other.
