Viewing Pics from external HD created on earlier system version on a Computer with more Current Software???

If my 1T of photo library was created with an earlier version of photos, and it is being updated for compatibility with your current version on your new mac DO I RISK LOSING THE PHOTOS ON MY EXTERNAL HD??

I have stored thousands of photos on my external HD. I had to update my 2015 mac book pro to Monterrey. The progress bar is stuck at 5% saying that it is updating the library. Will my external HD pics be damaged or lost through this processs? Is there a safer way to do this?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.6

No, select the drive, hit cmd-i - look at the top circled section. What do you see?

It must be formatted APFS or MacOS extended (journaled) (preferred for spinning drives). Not case sensitive. If you have not formatted it after purchase it will most likely be ExFat - which is not compatible.

It Must not be (or have been) used for time machine. (A time machine drive can be used if re-formatted)

It must have the 'ignore ownership" checkbox ticked.

It must be directly connected (No ethernet or wifi)
