iPhone email storage

My iPhone storage is showing as nearly full and it’s the emails taking up most of the storage. I’ve deleted thousands but it hasn’t made any difference. Same email account on iPad uses 232 mg of storage whilst iPhone shows 25.9 GB. Can anyone explain and tell me how I can reduce the storage taken up by email on. Y phone. Thanks in advance.
