Merging duplicate contacts

This is what it says in the Mac help:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)Open Contacts for me MacOS 12.6

In the Contacts app on your Mac, do any of the following:

  • Look for duplicate cards and merge them: Choose Card > Look for Duplicates, then click Merge.
  • Merge duplicate cards: In the list of contacts, select the duplicate cards you want to merge, then choose Card > Merge Selected Cards.

This does not work - there is no ability to select just the contacts that you wish to merge as it's all or nothing.

Linking does not work - I still end up with two contacts.

Anyway I want select the prime contact and merge the other one with it - this used to be possible.

Help please.

Hello Simon,

We see you're having issues merging duplicate contacts on your Mac. First, are you using iCloud for your contacts, or do you have multiple accounts they are linked to? This is important as the information from the article you referenced, Merge contact cards in Contacts on Mac - Apple Support, has a special note regarding what account the contacts or duplicates could be linked to.

When you use several accounts in Contacts, you may end up with several cards for a contact—for example, one card from Yahoo and one from Google. You can link the contact’s cards to streamline your list of contacts without merging the cards. See Link contacts.

Best regards.
